13 Fabulous Ways To Use Crisco – No Recipes On This List

I was watching the movie “The Help” the other day, and Millie was telling Celia all the different ways that Crisco was the best thing on the planet, especially for frying chicken. I love that movie!

(Minny praises Crisco thusly: “Ain’t just for frying. You ever get a sticky something stuck in your hair, like gum? That’s right, Crisco. Spread this on a baby’s bottom, you won’t even know what diaper rash is. Shoot, I seen ladies rub it under they eyes and on they husband’s scaly feet. And after all that it will still fry your chicken.”)

It made me wonder. I am sure that there are so many other ways to use the vegetable shortening other than just cooking, and I was right.

Prepare your new cookware – When you purchase cast-iron cookware it needs to be seasoned so it can prepare better food and last longer. Before using for the first time, rub some unsalted vegetable shortening on it and bake it in a 200 degree oven for about 2 hours. This process will need to be repeated several times.-

Use on candle molds – If you like to make your own candles, (because why wouldn’t you?) a good way to get the candle out of the mold is to rub it with Crisco shortening before you pour in the melted wax.

Lipstick stains – Lipstick on your clothes? Did you make the mistake that I always do by putting my makeup on first and then my outfit? Rub some Crisco on the stain and pour club soda over it. It will help to remove the stain.

Galoshes – Shine up your galoshes by rubbing some Crisco on and wipe off with a soft cloth.

Face paint makeup – Use 2 tablespoons of corn starch and 1 tablespoon of Crisco. Add food coloring as desired.

Removal of tar – apply some of the Crisco on the tar stain. Let this sit for about 2 ½ to 3 hours then wash your clothing.

Season cutting board or wooden utensils or wooden bowls. Wipe on some Crisco. Let it sit overnight and wipe clean the next day.

Get gum out – Crisco in the hair or fabric, and pull out with your fingers.

Hands – If you have super dry hands, use the Crisco like a lotion and rub into your skin. You will notice soft hands in no time.

Ink stained hands – Rub some Crisco on and ink will come off.

Freshen wooden bowls – Rubbing Crisco on your dull, wooden salad bowls brings back the shine. Rub them all over inside and outside, leave them over night and wipe off the next day.

Use on your shovel – You can put a little Crisco Vegetable Shortening on your shovel before using it in the snow. This allows the snow to slide off your shovel instead of sticking to it.

Easy cooking – Vegetable Shortening will easily glide out of a bowl or measuring cup that was previously used to beat or measure eggs.

The ingredients of Crisco is cottonseed oils, partially hydrogenated soybean, mono and diglycerides. You also may think this vegetable shortening is solid, but you will be surprised to know that this oil is over 80 % liquid.

Some people are not a fan of putting Crisco on their skin, but it is totally up to you. There are plenty of other ways to use the shortening that you remember in your cupboard when you were growing up.
