Eyeliner can be your best friend or your worst enemy. There are so many tricks to the trade. So how do you know if you are doing it right for the best and most flattering look? I have found makeup expert tips from all over the web to get that look you are looking for. Or just some tips you may have not thought of for your best look. Moreover, you can use Japanese Makeup products for better results.
Layer Your Liner
“If you’re not a professional makeup artist, it can be difficult to line those eyes, but then again liquid liner tends to stay on longer and smudge-free. So what I do is, I line my eyes first with a pencil liner because it’s easier to make that straight line with it. Then I go back on the line with the liquid liner. It’s kind of like coloring! The result? Your eyeliner will stay on, smudge-free, and well-lined.”
-Ysolt Usigan, beauty and style contributor at Huffington Post
For Soft and Sexy Eye Makeup
“For an eye look that’s defined but not too heavy, line your upper lash line with black eyeliner and the bottom lash line with brown eyeliner. This is one of my biggest makeup artist tricks for beautiful, soft eyes!”
-Mally Roncal, celebrity makeup artist
To Open Up Your Eyes
“Take a white eye pencil and line the inside rim of your lower eyelid. This really makes eyes pop! Fun fact: Look at the old black/white photos of the gorgeous women of the ‘30s and ‘40s like Marlene Dietrich and you’ll see this was done to them. Additionally, if your eyes are a close set, use the white pencil to lightly line the section where the upper and lower lids come together, closest to the nose. This will make them appear wider apart. The key here is to make sure it’s subtle.”
-Candice Sabatini, editorial director of BeautyNewsNYC.com
For Thin Brows
“For people with thin brows, use a pencil first that is a bit lighter than your natural color to define the shape, then follow with a brow powder that is close to your natural hair color with a thin, strong angle brush. After, use a brow gel or sealer which will set the powder. My fave is the Model in a Bottle – Long Lasting Eyebrow Sealer. It is by far the best sealer out there and I have tried many.”
-Lauren Fanuzzi, beauty guru and art director
Make Mascara Count
“Make a $5 tube of mascara look as good as the results from a $25 tube by holding a business card up along the inside edge of your lashes and sweeping the brush against it with your other hand. This way your lashes can’t bend out of the way of the brush and you end up coating every lash all the way to the tip. The results will leave you wide-eyed in more ways than one.”
-Wendy Toth, senior lifestyle editor for Digital Works @NBCU
On the Inside
“Lining the waterline, or inner rim of the eye adds intensity and extra definition, and creates the illusion of a thicker, fuller lash line.”
-Gilbert Soliz, Lead Artist for the Sephora PRO Beauty Team
Faking the Straight Line
“Smudging is key when you’re afraid you won’t create a straight line,” says Chang-Babaian. “When applying eyeliner, it’s not about creating a straight line with the pencil, but going back and forth with your brush until the line is smooth.”
-Eye makeup guru, Taylor Chang-Babaian, author of “Style Eyes.
Larger Eyes
“If you completely cover both the top and bottom lash lines with liner, you’re going to close the eye, making it look smaller. To make it look larger, you only want to apply it both halfway on top and bottom.”
Makeup artist Carmindy from TLC’s What Not to Wear
Make Them Look
“Wherever you put darkness is where your eye is drawn to, which means eyeliner allows you to change the shape of your eye.” Got small eyes? Make them bigger with a smoky wraparound. Want to elongate your eyes’ width? Do an exaggerated winged tip.”
-Eye makeup guru, Taylor Chang-Babaian, author of “Style Eyes.

I always see advise for making smaller eyes look bigger. I have large eyes and would like to know how to make them look smaller!
Casey says
If you like using eyeliner this is good for you. You need to line all the way around your eye top and bottom and make sure they connect at the tearduct or the inner corner of your eye. Having eyeliner all the way aroun your eyes will close them in making them look smaller. And this is coming from a girl with large eyes too. Good luck!
Anonymous says
They just said in the article above that if u put eyeliner on both bottom and top lids ur eyes will appear smaller
Tonia Hedrick says
To make your eyes appear larger, apply the eyeliner half way only, on top and bottom. From the middle of the eye to the outer part of the eye.
Just Another Person says
With everyone wanting to make their eyes seem larger, perhaps you should be happy that you have big beautiful eyes instead of trying to make them look smaller. There are girls green with envy that you’ve got those eyes.

line around the whole eye with black liner but on the bottom line put it on the waterline to close off the eyes
kat Anuszewski says
Try a wing that’s very thin near the corner but gets really wide at the end, this may sound dramatic but varies in drama depending on how far out you wing it and the eyeshadow you use. Using a natural or smokey eye this will just look like a darker corner in the crease, and intensify the look, but will also give you really pretty almond shaped eyes. Smokey eyes that are darker also narrow your eyes a little, but if you want it really subtle try just ling the water line in black liner and doing the outside corner to make your eyes looked balanced. IT all depends on the specific shape of the eye or look you’re trying to create.

Great tips! Which colors should I use to make my green eyes POP?
Anonymous says
I have green eyes and love to play around with makeup! A light or dark purple works really well! Brown is my favorite though. It really makes them pop!
Anonymous says
I agree with you about the purple! My fav choice!
Anonymous says
Try using the color of the flecks in your eyes. It is supposed to make the green pop. Also, like the other posters mentioned, purple works well.
Anonymous says
Purple and brown are great. I also love orange. I have green eyes too.
Anonymous says
Purple eyeshadow is definately my go-to :)
kat Anuszewski says
Black or grey for a smokey effect will make any eye pop so you can try that. On green try combinations of colors like copper with light purple, or if your eyes are like mine and you have a different color around your iris (typically orange or yellow) try combing golden colors with either an orange/ brown tone, or a darker purple used in the crease and on the outer corner, with a light yellow as highlight. Highlighting colors should always be matt, but the rest of it depends on personal preference just make sure to blend very well, or find different ways to combine the color.

So sweet of June 8th “Anonymous” to give you such thoughtful and constructive criticism. It definitely sounds like there was NO malice in that comment.
MTS–excellent handling of a comment that while, correct, could have been handled with much more grace and tact. It’s easy to be a snark when you post anonymously.

Hi Anonymous and @Tree. Thanks so much for your comments and support. It is true about hiding behind ‘Anonymous’ comments. It’s funny because someone feels they can comment like that when they just stop by to see one post, and have never read any of my other post’s. Otherwise, they would know that I source everything that requires. I should have had it up sooner, but I left out of town right after I got this post up. Life happens, and I guess with that comes the good and the bad. xoxo

What about if you’re older and your eyelids are starting to droop a little. Not much but just a little. Plus I wear glasses. I have been told my eyes are one of my best features but I’m in my 50’s now and don’t want to apply eye make up the way I did when i was in my 20’s. Any advice would really be helpful. Sorry had to put anonymous. Don’t like my age put out there. But really need some advice on eye make up. I would love to be able to line my eyes but don’t want to look like I’m trying to be younger than I am. My eyes are green, large, almond shaped.

My Thirty Spot says
Hi Victoria,
I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to keep you waiting without an answer, but I actually was working on an entire post to answer your question because it is a lot of information that I didn’t want to just leave in a comment. I thought it was a great question and other readers might appreciate a post for anti-aging eye makeup. I should have this post up tomorrow or Friday. Again, I’m sorry, and I hope you will enjoy the post.

OK. That sounds great. Thank you for your help. I just just want to make my eyes look really good without looking harsh. – Victoria
Anonymous says
I don’t want them to appear smaller I just want to learn how to apply makeup on them without looing harsh. I think if you put liner all the way across top and bottom that’s too much. I’ve heard you only need to put the eyeliner halfway across your eyelid – letting your pupil be the stopping point on both top and bottom. Idk… Guess I will go to a About Face or somewhere very similar. Victoria
My Thirty Spot says
Hi Victoria,
I’m sorry you didn’t get what you were looking for. I worked really hard on the post I put up for you today, and I spent a lot of hours and did a lot of research. I didn’t just copy and paste from a magazine or website which is what your last comment is referring to. As far as agreeing with the girl that said I plagiarized, I never stated that I came up with the points from this particular post. This article is about professional make-up artists quotes that I found from all over the web, which I stated at the beginning of my post. I tried to give you a lot of ways to wear eye make-up without looking harsh and how to wear with glasses, and I think I gave you some pretty great options. I’m sorry if you were disappointed.

My Thirty Spot says
Victoria,
Are you sure you are reading the correct post? The post I put up yesterday, specifically for your questions? Nowhere on the post from yesterday did I say to line both the top and bottom eyelid, in fact here is exactly what I said,
“Avoid lining your lower lash line. It closes your eye, makes them look smaller and older.”
Anonymous says
I read what she wrote and I’m a professional make-up artist for a very predominant brand and all the tips she gave are right on point and good advice for older women.
Did you even read the article Victoria? Or did you just scan it over and comment even though you don’t know what you’re talking about. She never said to line the whole eyelid. Maybe you should read the post more carefully.
Remember, you asked her for advice, just because you didn’t like it doesn’t mean she’s wrong. You obviously don’t know either, or you wouldn’t have asked her.
Anonymous says
The fact that you wrote an entire post to answer her question, rather than just answering her in the comments like a lot of bloggers do, shows your dedication to your blog and your readers.
That lady is just ignorant and disrespectful and I hope she doesn’t get you down. I love your blog and I have learned so many different things from your posts.
Anonymous says
She has deleted what she wrote back to me. She didn’t refer to anything about glasses and she DID say to line your top and bottom eyelids. The person writing this blog doesn’t know any more than the average female knows. I noticed she has at the top of this blog is an area on Health. I Do Not recommend anyone taking her advice on anything pertaining to your health. PLEASE. Not trying to be mean but you do need to be careful of what people put up on these boards. – Victoria

Victoria,
I think you are getting confused at which post you were reading, because according to your last comment, I can only assume you did not read the post that I wrote for you. Here it is again:

You can copy and paste the link into a browser.
This post that you are leaving comments on, is not the post I wrote to answer your questions. Maybe that is where you are getting confused.
To respond to your recent comment;
I did not delete anything that I wrote back to you. I did refer to wearing makeup when you wear glasses and I DID NOT say to line top and bottom lids. I’m sorry that this is confusing for you. I recommend reading the post in its entirety.
Anonymous says
The last thing I would do is take any recommendation from you, Victoria! You can’t even seem to read the right post and yet you like to spew a bunch of hate to this blogger who does a great job on her posts!
You need to get a clue!
Anonymous says
I don’t know what is going on with you Victoria but she did write a whole post to answer your question! Why you would recommend not reading this site since it is informative everyday! It might be best for YOU to stop reading it and get your information elsewhere! Jeez!
Anonymous says
Wow. Such drama. Give the blogger a break. Victoria maybe you should research and write your own blog and make up tips? That way you will learn and be able to write with perfection and remember to site all of your sources. Nobody is perfect. It does not appear that the blogger could make you happy no matter what she does or says – you clearly are going to jump down her throat.
Anonymous says
I think what may have happened is that Victoria became confused as to when the blogger was posting and when a reader was posting. If you’re not used to forum/comment board format it could be confusing to follow. Not excusing her rudeness, but that just seems to be what happened and may be why she keeps referring to the blogger as “she” instead of “you” when answering the author. Odd back and forth to follow- great tips either way! :) I’m definitely going to show my mother the tips for mature women, she’ll love it!
tlc says
Personally, I’ve always stayed away from black pencil liner and all liquid liner. I’m rather pale with dark gold hair (loreal golden blonde, hehehe), and light eyes which vary in color between turquoise and olive. Close up, they’re blue with yellow flecks but take on different hues depending on what I’m wearing.
I line the top lashed only with a dark gold or light brown pencil then smudge the line into the lashes. The goldish brown color accents my eye shade nicely and the soft line provides definition without looking harsh. A sweep of black mascara is all I need after that; no shadow at all. I’ve never lined the lower lid at all.
I’ve done this since I was very young and needed just enough eye makeup to avoid looking like a goldfish. :D Now that I’m 47 (yeeps) the colors and technique are still serving me well. The soft brown calls attention to my eyes and not my little lines. Many days I skip the mascara and just to au naturel.
Don’t be afraid to try shades besides black, you might be pleasantly surprised. And remember that soft pencil blending can create wonderful, soft eyes.

wow. who knew there could be so much drama and debate over make up tips. I found the ridiculous comments almost as fascinating as the blog! Some people just seem to look for people to start stuff with on the web..they are most likely too cowardly to do this face to face & probably feel better about themselves when they create drama online. If you don’t like someone’s blog, leave. Grow up people!

So, to have “sexy” and “open” eyes, could I use the white eyeliner in addition to the black and brown? Or would it end up just creating a grey and light brown color?
My Thirty Spot says
Hi Katrina,
To get the ‘sexy’ and ‘open’ look for your eyes, I would line your bottom lid with the white eyeliner and line the top with your black or brown liner. You can also finish your eyes with your black or brown liner with a winged tip.

Hello MTS! I just ran across your blog on Pinterest and I absolutely LOVE it! Keep up the good work! ;)

Hi Anonymous, I meant to put the link to your question about accentuating your large puppy dog eyes. https://www.mythirtyspot.com/2012/08/draw-more-attention-to-your-large-eyes.html
@Alison, thanks so much! And thanks for commenting!
My Thirty Spot says
Hi Amber! Thanks so much for commenting. I’m so happy to hear you like my site! As far as wearing inexpensive or more expensive makeup, I do think more expensive makeup does make a difference. You can’t really find matte lipstick because shimmer is less expensive to use as a filler. Mascara does make a difference but at the same time, for hygienic reasons, you might want to go with a cheaper brand since you should replace it every three months. Eye shadow can be less expensive as long as you have a primer or foundation on. I also prefer more expensive foundation. However, I really like Revlon primer. It makes my foundation look flawless.
Hope that helped. I will probably write a post about this. Thanks for the idea!
xoxo

Hi Katrina O’Connor!
Thanks so much for your super sweet comment. I really appreciate it and it made my day. I am so glad these tips helped.
As for your eyes, have you tried using a eye shadow primer around that? I will hold the pencil in place all day. I would also try using a cream eye shadow that you can apply in a straight line with a thin brush. That is liquid and pencil in one.
Let me know if that helped and if you have any other questions. Thanks again for commenting!
